An eye-opening afternoon at the Silahis Arts & Artifacts, Manila

My friends and I spent some time in Intramuros right after our food exploration in Chinatown last September --- as we waited for another pal to join us that afternoon. We actually dropped by the Silahis Art & Artifacts to help pass up on time. And from there did we see firsthand some of the most interesting Philippine artifacts, books, cultural handicrafts, sculptures, paintings and more.

The Silahas Center is the building on the left (the one with the brown exterior).

Silahis Art & Artifacts was established in 1966. The team behind the corporation has already ventured in 'designing, producing, wholesaling, retailing and exporting' of quality-made, handcrafted Philippine products. Now, according to the people behind Silahis...

"We are dedicated to the development of a deeper understanding of the many-faceted heritage of the Philippines and its peoples through a greater appreciation of their culture and crafts. Indigenous designs, native resources and the spirit that has used them in everyday life are the principles of our concern. Comprehensive uses and fine craftsmanship is the object of our inquiry. A better understanding of the Filipino people is our goal."

Amongst the products that Silahis carries are the following: cultural artifacts, fine crafts, folk art, oriental ceramics, maps, textiles, primitive art, old and new cultural publications on Asia, the Philippines and the Pacific, fine art, prints, and sculpture. Furthermore, several of their designs come from the Mountain Province, Palawan, and Mindanao Island Region.

They also have one of the largest export showrooms in the Philippines. So if you happen to be in Intramuros, you should definitely check them out. It's a must-stop when you're exploring the City of Manila.
